Preface
Transparency and trust. Two words that are really needed now in Covid-19 condition. As Covid-19 pandemic have caused chaos throughout countries around the globe, authorities have taken necessary precaution to prevent the worsening of condition by slowing down the number of incidence and morbidity due to the disease. In the era of digitalization, various kind of information can be easily accessed by anyone at any given time. Such condition will easily lead to mass confusion and susceptible for spread of misinformation among the people. Therefore, it is of crucial importance for those with jurisdiction such as the WHO and the governments to provide guidance and reliable information to prevent unnecessary fear and hysteria. However, in Indonesia, there are lack of transparency of information given to the citizens through out the country. With no definite epidemiology data of the disease, people may either underestimate the severity of the situation in their local area and may further spread the disease, or overestimate the scale of the local outbreak which subsequently hinder their productivity.
The situation can be more detrimental to those who belong to lower socioeconomic group or located in remote geographical area where they have limited access to trusted source of information to obtain latest information in regard to the diseases. In addition, people with lower educational level also will be more prone to fall into hoax information and will be more vulnerable to the disease. Ideally, current condition could have significantly improved if only the government act fast and respond accordingly. Honest information and data could have been given to capable microbiologists, clinicians, psychologists and most importantly epidemiologists to assess the situation together. The role of epidemiologists is greatly contribute in term of this pandemic situation, where the result will be distributed to the citizens so they can act accordingly based on the situation report of their local environment, unlike the reality of the circumstances we have today where people are afraid to step out of the house due to the lack of information. By identifying causes of disease, determining the health status of populations and the targets of public health interventions can be used to advocate policy and develop public health interventions based on evidence based.
Beside, need of trusted source of information for citizens, our frontliners are also facing limitness in logistic. These are happened in big cities, urban areas. How about our frontliners in rural areas even in remote geographical areas? How about our vulnerable people especially in those remote area? Did they concern about their healthy related this virus? Are they able to reach health facilities to check their symptoms? To respon this condition, surge capacity management plan is needed to manage this pandemic throughout the country. It needs collaboration amongst government, health offices, health facilities, medics, allied health professionals, public health professionals. Ultimately, the government should apply policies that are fair and just to protect all citizen without discrimination. Empathy, openness, honesty, and transparency can build trust from the citizen to the government to manage this condition better.
Addresing this crisis, we would like to open knowledge sharing and professional discussion through webinar that will provide a great opportunity for us to discuss with public health professional from Singapore about how they manage their crisis to build cohesive, more united, and better prepareness for the next outbreak and how Indonesia need to optimally empower public health professionals to manage this surge condition to give fair and equitable services.
